Emma and I are doing our morning ward round. Sister eyes up Emma in a manner that can only be described as sly.
“So doctor,” she says, “are you married?”
Emma looks startled. “No.”
“Ahh – so you have a boyfriend?”
“No.”
A slow smile spreads across Sister’s face in a manner that can only be described as evil. “Ahh!” she declares triumphantly, “So you are a virgin!”
There is a pause and then Emma smiles in a manner that can only be described as demure. And says nothing.

We are two 6th year med students at Oxford coming to Hlabisa for our elective in February and March next year. We were searching the internet for more information about Hlabisa, and found your blog-we think you lectured us during our year 4 pathology course! It's been very interesting to get an idea of what working at Hlabisa is like from reading your blog, and we are both very excited about coming- it looks absolutely fantastic and just what we are looking for. It would be great to hear any more advice/information about Hlabisa- in particular, what would you advise about accommodation? Is there anything we should do in preparation (of course it seems wise to read up on the different spectrum of disease we are likely to encounter), or remember to bring? Will you still be around at that time or will you have come back to the UK by then?
Looking forward to hearing from you.
Best wishes,
Charlie Raine and Anna Bates
